Born and raised in Portland, Maine, Joseph Dunn studied at the Portland School of Art, the Worcester Art Museum, and Chautauqua Institution in his early years. He received his BA degree in Fine Art from the University of MA, Dartmouth. Joseph was awarded the Greenshields Foundation Fellowship, Montreal Canada, in 1976 for post graduate study in Italy where he lived for 4 months and continued to develop his skills.

After focusing on his art for many years, Joseph started a family with his wife, Sandy. He pursued and received his Master of Arts Degree from Assumption College in Rehabilitation Counseling.  During this time, they raised two wonderful sons, Charlie, married to Paige Turcotte and the parents to his first two beautiful grandchildren, Wesley and Isla; and his younger son, Peter who is engaged to Veronica LaBelle.  While raising his family, Joseph put up his brushes for the most part and focused on his wife, children and career as a rehabilitation counselor. 

Thirty years later, Joseph has now retired and has returned to his first love, painting.  He also enjoys spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren, and as much time as he can on the links.
